Ding Darling
The Ding Darling Natural Wildlife Refuge is the largest nature preserve on Sanibel, and one of the most beautiful spots on the island. It boasts gorgeous hiking trails and the Wildlife Drive that takes you through the heart of the refuge. It was established in 1976 in honor of the famed political cartoonist Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling, who’s many salient works on the environment, war, and other important issues are on display in the Visitor Center and Museum. My parents have volunteered every Saturday at the visitor center, and I have spent many lovely afternoons in the Refuge with my children.
